Computerised Tomography
A CT (computerised tomography) scanner uses x-rays to make an image of the internal structure of the limb bones of the horse. Several x-ray emitters and detectors take x-rays at different angles around the limb, the beam direction being across the limb. These pictures are fed into a computer, which produces a series of 'slice' images. The end result is a very detailed picture of the structure and shape of the bone, on which to make a diagnosis. Also, precise data on size, bone density and bone strength are produced. This machine is one of only a few in the world being used in equine orthopaedics.
