Severe laceration of a hind leg. Three to four weeks after treatment

Surgery

We have a fully equipped self-contained surgery area, with padded boxes for anaesthetic recovery. Our surgeons have undergone specialist training with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and are able to perform a wide range of surgical procedures. During surgery the horses are kept under the watchful eye of our trained specialist anaesthetists and receive state-of-the-art monitoring and support.

Upper Airway and Head Surgery

We perform a variety of surgeries aimed at correcting "wind" problems in horses such as roarers. We are also skilled in dealing with more complicated cases such as dental disease, sinus infections, and head tumours. Often these cases require an involved work up including X-rays of the head, scintigraphy, laboratory tests, endoscopy and oral examination to enable us to determine an accurate diagnosis. This is all available at Massey University.

Orthopaedic Surgery

Athletic horses often experience bone, joint, tendon or ligament injuries at some time during their career. We have a full range of equipment and instruments available for the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic conditions including, arthritis, infected joints, chip fractures, broken bones, and tendon and ligament injuries.

Our clinicians are available for second opinions, as well as to review X-rays and discuss treatment options along with the cost and prognosis of any orthopaedic problems your horse might have.

Emergency Abdominal Surgery

Fortunately for horses in New Zealand, colic appears to be less common here than in other parts of the world. However, it does occur occasionally and when it does, good veterinary care is important. Some horses with colic may require surgery and others may require fluid therapy and intensive care to correct the problem. Many horses that have had colic surgery go on and lead healthy and active lives after the surgery. The veterinarians and staff at Massey University have a wealth of knowledge and experience in dealing with colic and critical care cases. Early referral can often offer a good prospect for surgical colic cases. Our success rates in operated cases are similar or better than those in other referral hospitals worldwide.

Soft Tissue Surgery

We offer a full range of procedures including repair of foaling injuries, rig castration, hernia repair, bladder surgery, treatment of skin tumours, wound repair and management, skin grafting, and eye surgery.
