Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a wonderful technique that allows a safe and non-invasive method of visualising tendons and ligaments as well as the interior of the body. Ultrasound provides detailed images of body organs and structures that cannot be obtained with X-rays.
We are fortunate to have the HDI 3000 Ultrasound system from ATL-Philips. This ultrasound system is similar to what is commonly used in human hospitals. It allows tissue resolution far superior to that achieved by any machine on the veterinary market, and also allows the sophisticated use of "colourflow" technology (colours show the actual movement and speed of blood). This enables us to assess the horse’s heart, proving particularly useful for horses with a heart murmur. We also have an ultrasound machine dedicated to imaging of tendon, muscle and bone. This machine produces high quality images of these structures and allows accurate interpretation.
